The word Community classically means “a group of people living together in one place”. The word has expanded to mean groups formed through activities as well as locations. Micro- Communities are just that… small groups of individuals gathered to share resources and activities: living, working, managing.
Communities share something within themselves among their members. This can be as simple as a roof or common utilities and as complex as a social or political value system. A Micro Community can have many forms. The smaller Communes of the ‘60’s and 70’s were Micro-Communities. Small Co-operative buildings can be Micro-Communities, as can small neighborhoods of many variations. We think of Micro-Communities as the replacement for the neighborhoods and organizations many of us grew up with in a very different time and place last century. The world was not globalized and homogenized, and local communities provided our identity.
The difference between a random number of individuals, residences, and/or commercial activities and a community of any size is the intention to share some or all of the communities intentions, interests, and resources among it’s members. In a Micro-Community one would know one’s neighbors and share responsibilities for maintenance and development as well as leisure and play. Think of any community you know and imagine it scaled down to 3-10 members. This is a very manageable way to relate to neighborhood.
We have been developing Micro-Communities for the past 30 years in Northern California. Two of these properties, one Urban and one Rural, feature rentals you will see further into this site. They are larger properties that have been divided into discreet living units sharing semi-public spaces and resources, giving tenants and owners alike a sense of privacy as well as neighborhood. Explore the site for a look into a future that remembers the way of the past.
This site is continuously being developed. We wil be adding development opportunities and rental units as well as business and community networking opportunities for other property owners, developers, and tenants on our companion sites as time allows. Visit us now and then for more information.
